2017 is just around the corner, and with a fresh year comes a fresh color: Greenery! Pantone, the global authority on all things color, started selecting a Color of the Year in 2000. What exactly does it mean to be Color of the Year? According to Pantone, the term is metaphorical, a “color snapshot” that reflects the current “mood and an attitude” of what they believe is occurring in cultures around the world.
For their 18th selection, they’ve chosen greenery, a bright and exciting yellowish green “that evokes the first days of spring when nature’s greens revive, restore, and renew” (Pantone). The 2017 shade is meant to evoke the natural world and represent the beauty of the environment. It’s easy to see why Pantone thinks greenery reflects the global “mood and attitude,” environmental concerns are at the forefront of the scientific community and is a hot button issue in politics across the globe. A variety of industries, everything from designer jewelry to construction, are working to “go green” and reduce their impact on the environment. Greenery isn’t just about the environment, though, it’s also “emblematic of the pursuit of personal passions and vitality” (Pantone). Simply put, greenery is the color of energy.
Pantone calls greenery, “nature’s neutral” and “trans-seasonal,” meaning it will go with anything, any time of year. Everyone knows green as a spring color, but in 2017, it will be in style all year long. Greenery, and a variety of other bright green shades, are already popping up on Spring 2017 runways all over the world. If greenery seems like too bold a step to take with clothing, choosing a gemstone necklace or timepiece in the shade is a beautiful and subtle way to work this ‘it’ color of the new year. Greenery is going to be everywhere in 2017, so it’s time to start shopping!
